Abe Lastfogel of the William Morris Agency, one of the world's largest talent agencies, gave a tremendous helping hand to the USO's Celebrity Entertainment in the early 1940's. Lastfogel left the agency to recruit Hollywood entertainers for USO shows, which were called" Camp Shows." Camp Shows were the best-known recreational facility that the USO provided to the Armed Forces. These shows took place wherever there were soldiers, whether an audience of two to audiences numbering over 30,000, entertainers came. There were four Camp Show circuits. They were called the Victory Circuit, the Blue Circuit, The Hospital Circuit, and the Foxhole Circuit. The Victory Circuit put on full Broadway shows to the larger bases in the United States. The Blue Circuit brought a vaudeville type show to the smaller bases both overseas and at home. The Hospital Circuit provided shows to soldiers in hospitals overseas and in the United States, and the Foxhole Circuit put on shows at bases on the front-line. |
