In 1964, Bob Hope and his troupe came to Vietnam for the first time to do an annual Christmas Show. Other entertainers soon followed during the next seven years of fighting. Stars such as Joey Heatherton, Jack Jones, Carroll Baker, Raquel Welch and Martha Raye all participated in USO shows. Other celebrities included Frances Langford, Raymond Burr, Phyllis Diller, Sammy David, Jr., Henry Fonda, Nancy Sinatra and John Wayne. Athletes such as Floyd Patterson, and Jack Kemp, were also on the USO celebrity tours. In total, from May 1965 to June 1972, 569 units of USO Shows staged over 5,600 performances in clubs in Vietnam, as well as in military hospitals in Guam, Hawaii, Japan, and Okinawa. Back home, USO clubs located near main embarkation points such as Oakland, California were very popular. Airports in the United States also had USO lounges for troops in transit, such as in San Francisco and Columbus, Ohio. In 1972, as troops began to withdraw, all USO facilities were closed in Vietnam. Bob Hope summed up the sentiment that he and other entertainers felt when he said “In Vietnam they were so grateful to you for coming; they were fantastic.” |
