The USO's “Better Than A Letter” program started by Montgomery Ward chairman Bernard Brenna in 1990 was a huge success. Every Montgomery Ward store in the United States provided viewing and recording facilities for family members of those stationed overseas. In addition, hundreds of camcorders, VCRs, and televisions were sent overseas to that every serviceman and woman could record messages for back home.
USO mobile canteens, large 4-wheel drive all-terrain trucks, carrying snacks, drinks, video and compact disc players and movies as well as other things, were driven across the desert. They were a welcome treat from those boredom and treat to those stationed far from home. |
