The public response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks was unanimous. The overall national feeling of helplessness and frustration spilled over into the entertainment world. The industry not only gave up hours of their time to entertain troops for free, but also raised millions of dollars for the victim's families. The USO had not seen such a reaction since World War II.

Stars such as David Letterman, Robin Williams, Drew Carey, Wayne Newton, Arnold Schwartzenegger, and the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders and others made visits and continue to make tours to the troops overseas. Bringing smiles, laughter and entertainment to the many who have been separated from their loved ones for long periods of time, the USO lets the troops know that they are not forgotten.

The USO provides support in many different ways, through airport and fleet support centers, mobile canteens, family and community centers, celebrity entertainment tours and crisis response among other programs. The USO has always been there and remains there today. Wherever troops are deployed, the USO will follow.
