The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., made a huge impact on life, as we know it. Many say that America lost its innocence that day; that lives were changed forever. In response, the United States began an aerial bombing campaign against the Taliban and Al-Qaida forces in Afghanistan on October 7, 2001. Combined, these troops formed the International Security Assistance Forces or ISAF.
On March 19, 2004, British and American forces struck Iraq. With the threat of weapons of mass destruction, and the belief that Iraq was involved with the terrorist attacks in 2001, troops were deployed to take down the government and free the country of Saddam Hussein. Today there are over 11,000 troops deployed in Afghanistan and over 140,000 troops in Iraq.
