| Navigation is an essential element in every mission. That is why we teach it to the cadets before they go on a simulated C-54 flight. Squadron activities include: determining distance in statute and nautical miles, altitude relative to map features, directions and compass functions, weather, wind drift, controlled vs. non-controlled airports as well as radio/control tower communication.
The mission specialist helps the cadets plot their course from Midland International Airport to San Angelo's Mathis Airport, and determine distance between the two airports. Cadets learn about direction and are supplied with a compass to determine the heading of their flight. Finally, the mission specialist will explain altitude and how to read the sectional map in terms of heights of obstacles along the flight path.
